We are back to our regularly scheduled programming with part two of this year’s “Good, Bad, and Ugly” recap series! The second half of this year threw just as many punches as the first, but there were some highlights and moments of happiness in the later months of the year as well. Here are some good, bad, and ugly topics from the latter half of 2022 that made headlines.
- True Star’s Second Annual From the ‘Go Fest
Definitely the highlight of my entire summer. From planning to executing the festival, I had a great time. With the many talented performers and other creatives there capturing these moments, it was a very enjoyable experience. Stay tuned for From the ‘Go 2023!
- Beyoncé Dropped Renaissance
Not having any music from Beyoncé since 2019 took a toll on all the fans. Listeners wasted no time sending her streams through the roof and making her songs popular to dance challenges on TikTok.
- NOPE premiered
Jordan Peele, creator of NOPE, gave us yet another successful horror/sci-fi movie. Starring Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer, the movie hit theaters in July and received mixed reviews.
- Student Loan Forgiveness Announced
This one made all the college students and graduates excited. President Biden announced that there would be a student loan forgiveness program in place for those eligible.
- Bears Training Camp
True Star gave me another summer memory by taking us to Bears training camp. We got to see the players practicing and doing drills while having some fun of our own playing football and just enjoying ourselves.
- Rihanna Announced as headlining Act for Super Bowl Halftime 2023
This news made everyone excited. After not hearing music from her in song long, it’s going to be good to see her hit the stage and show that she’s still as talented as before.

- Rihanna Dropped “Lift Me Up”
After not dropping music since ANTI, it came as a surprise that Rihanna released something music related. This song was done specifically for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack.
The Bad & The Ugly
- Death of Shanquella Robinson
The death of Shanquelle Robinson was devastating and left many with more questions than answers. One thing it did teach was to always be mindful of the people you surround yourself with. Not everyone is your true friend.
- Elon Musk & Twitter
When Elon Musk bought Twitter, it seems like everything went to crap immediately after. From the firing and quitting of large numbers of employees, many people are still deciding whether or not to stop using the social media platform.
- Kanye’s Jewish Remarks / Brands Cutting Ties
Is it really a surprise for Ye to say something crazy? Not really, but the reactions he got for some of his more recent remarks were harsher this time around. From basically being canceled to having brands and other celebrities cutting ties, Ye’s punishment this time around was pretty severe. Now the big question is, will he be able to bounce back from this?
- Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Premiered
We’ve been waiting on this since the first Black Panther movie came out. Wakanda Forever filled in the gaps that were left from the first movie and paid a beautiful tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.
- Homicides Down in Chicago According to CPD
It’s always nice to see things that are uplifting like this. Instead of always hearing about crime, we should be spotlighting the positive moments like this one.

The duo I never knew we needed. Drake and 21 made lots of catchy songs that’ll keep being played on the radio and added to playlists for a while to come.
The Bad & The Ugly
- Takeoff’s Death
This had to be one of the most unexpected and tragic celebrity losses. Takeoff was so unproblematic and focused on the things that mattered to him which is why the loss was taken so hard by music lovers everywhere.
- More Subvariants of Omicron
Variants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 replaced BA.5 as the predominant virus strain in the United States. This is concerning considering the subvariants keep getting stronger and are gaining more resistance to the vaccines and boosters.

Not only did SZA drop music, but she achieved the highest streaming week for an R&B album. We love to see a Black queen winning!
The Bad & The Ugly
- Stephen “tWitch” Boss Dies
This news came so suddenly and unexpectedly. It’s always sad to see and experience death but it’s even sadder when the people who pass don’t portray that there’s anything wrong. This death was a reminder to check on your friends. You never know what someone is going through.
- Tory Lanez is Found Guilty of Shooting Megan Thee Stallion
We all can pretty much agree that the whole shooting situation between Megan Thee Stallion and Tory Lanez got super messy. Now that Lanez has been found guilty the line for who supports who is has gotten even more blurred.
- Travelers Coming from China must Now Take a COVID Test
According to recent reports, the number of COVID cases in China are up. Travelers must show proof of a negative test before entering the states.

And that’s a wrap for 2022! Hopefully, everyone had a year full of fun, love, happiness, and prosperity. Here’s to making 2023 an even better year! HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody!
