3 Reasons to Go Watch ‘The Marvels’

‘The Marvels’ is a surprise hit for the MCU. Here’s why.

‘The Marvels,’ now in theaters everywhere, stars Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, and Teyonna Parris as Monica Rambeau.

Recently, there’s no denying that public opinion has swayed on Marvel, people on TikTok and X using the movies as examples for corny, lazy, or down-right bad writing. So when they announced the release of their newest addition to the MCU, lots of people gave the movie a pass. Well, they’re missing out.

Starring Brie Larson as Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, and Teyonna Parris as Monica Rambeau, the movie follows the team-up of these iconic superheroes, nicknamed The Marvels by Ms. Marvel. Every time the three of them use their powers, they swap places, making the film a strange, wacky, “Freaky Friday”-esque comedy.

The Marvels has already made history as the highest grossing theatrical release of all time by a Black woman director, at $110 million. Nia DaCosta pitched her idea for the follow-up to “Captain Marvel” in 2020, making Brie Larson text their mutual friend Tessa Thompson with: “NIA DACOSTA.”

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Marvel president Kevin Fiege commented, “We were just very impressed with her indie cred—and her nerd cred.” DaCosta’s not the only one with nerd cred on set for the movie, which brings us to the reasons why you should see the movie.

Reason One: Iman Vellani. Not only is it like the character of Ms. Marvel literally floated off the page when Vellani steps on screen, but she’s also hilarious. She feels like the life of the movie, making it a true enjoyment to watch. Villani has become popular for being a bigger Marvel nerd than Fiege himself, constantly being the one the other actors on set ask for superhero lore.

Reason Two: Samuel L. Jackson. Making another return to the MCU after “Secret Invasion,” Nick Fury is back and better than ever. He might not be quite ready to return to earth from his space station, but he’s ready to crack a few jokes, navigate the awkwardness between Captain Marvel and Monica, and of course, unleash alien cats on his unsuspecting crew.

Reason Three: The editing! The editing was amazingly done in this movie, with crazy, body-switching fights, clever camera movement, and the musical segment. Oh, did I mention there was a musical segment? Yeah, watch the movie just for that. Ignore everything else.

Kidding, kidding, but The Marvels is a breath of fresh air for fans who are just looking for some laughs and a good time. It’s not as serious and brooding as “Secret Invasion” and “Loki,” but just as fun to watch. Go and give it a shot.
