The holidays are all about warmth and cheer. But for some, wintertime can prove to pile up with added stress: the freezing cold, traveling, being surrounded by family, spending money on gifts… you name it. Here are some tips on how to make the holidays a little more relaxing and give yourself some needed me-time:
Take a Warm Bath
Warm baths are always great for self-care, but they make especially good treats during the wintertime. What’s better than escaping the freezing cold outside to stay in and cozy up with a good book and a bath? A bonus is getting to use winter themed bath treats: hot cocoa bath bombs, cinnamon scented bath salts, candy cane bubble soaks, just to name a few choices. The only trouble is, it’s so hard to get yourself out of the bath!
Find a Comfort Place
Whether it be in your own home, someone else’s, or somewhere out in the world, it’s always nice to find a place to decompress by yourself. The holidays can seem crowded with family members and sometimes you need a break. Your bedroom is always a good choice, or if you’re traveling, maybe a guest room – even a bathroom is better than nothing! Light a candle (during the holidays my personal pick is a pine scented candle), or listen to music… Anything that will give you a little escape from the world is a treat.
Watch a Holiday Movie
Cozy up under a blanket, grab some popcorn, and watch a holiday movie! There are two holiday movie genres I recommend: One, childhood comforts, like A Charlie Brown Christmas or Home Alone. Two, cheesy movies that you can laugh over (a few Hallmark movies come to mind). Both Cable and streaming services love to push out feel-good holiday movies during this time, so you’ll never be short of a good watch.
Make a Homemade Gift
Some of the most thoughtful gifts are homemade. And, good for us, they can be relaxing to make and get our minds off of stress! Paint a picture, make a card, knit a scarf, decorate a gingerbread house, or bake some cookies. Both you and your gift receiver will appreciate the time you took to make the gift.
Relax with Some Good Old Hot Cocoa
This one’s a classic. And why shouldn’t it be? Absolutely nothing can beat the warm sugary taste of hot chocolate (bonus if you add mini marshmallows). If you want to get extra fancy, you can pick up a hot cocoa bomb and watch it explode with flavour in front of your own eyes. Here’s an idea: take a warm bath with a bath bomb, while drinking your hot cocoa bomb. Or, if you don’t drink hot cocoa, a peppermint tea is always a good go-to. No matter what you choose, I’m sure you’ll be thankful for a warm comfort in cold times.
