The Oscars are taking place March 12th, honoring 2022’s best films. Among such prestigious selections are these animated films, nominated for Best Animated Feature. The nominees are as follows:
Turning Red, by Disney/Pixar, a film about a young girl grappling with generational trauma and emotions as she grows into a woman.
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, a new take on the classic fairy tale with a huge tone shift compared to the cheery Disney aesthetic with a more grim/mythical style.
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On from A24 is a unique film that combines live action and stop motion together. Based on a miniseries of the same name, it features a filmmaker encountering a strange little talking shell and their bond as they explore new things together and find success in their own ways.
The Sea Beast from Netflix is about an unlikely crew chasing after a legendary monster of the uncharted waters.
Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is a movie tied into the Shrek universe, focusing on the legendary outlaw Puss in Boots fleeing from his own mortality, chasing after a wishing star to gain his lives back.
My personal pick would either be Puss in Boots: The Last Wish or Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio. I found them both to be films with such great heart and artistic merit, as well as genuine quality in its writing, visuals, and themes, giving a new lens and interpretation on previously existing media with a brand new vision. All of these films are absolutely wonderful in their own right, and I wish them all luck in the upcoming Academy Awards!
