BA. 2, a newer version of the omicron variant, is the latest subvariant of COVID-19.
This new variant has been spotted in 40 countries, including the United States with “more than 8,000 cases worldwide” according to the publication Advance Local. Cases with this subvariant have been spotted in the United States in Washington State, California, and Texas.
The original omicron variant, BA. 1, has been responsible for the recent spike in case numbers across the world. As of now, there hasn’t been any indicators that show BA.2 as being more highly transmissible or more immune to the vaccine than past variants.
It is still not unknown how the COVID-19 vaccine will affect this new subvariant.
Health officials and experts have not disclosed where BA. 2, also being referred to as stealth omicron, was first found.
This new COVID-19 variant is something researchers and medical professionals are beginning to pay closer attention to to further uncover the unknowns that come with a new variant.
In order to stay protected, it is recommended that you continue to sanitize your hands and other frequently touched surfaces often, wear a well fitted mask, and practice social distancing whenever possible. It should go without saying but, if you haven’t done so already, get vaxed.
