Summer is alive and kicking. This is the season for everything that can be done in the sun, but are you truly protecting yourself in the midst of your summer fun?
The biggest misconception about our melanin skin is that it doesn’t need to be protected. The truth is that our skin can be damaged from the sun just like everyone else’s. Sunrays can cause discoloration of the skin, cause skin to age faster, cause heat rash, and more. Have you heard someone say, “Black people don’t need sunscreen”? I know I’ve heard this on several different occasions. Protecting our skin is a huge part of what makes our melanin pop. Luckily there is a brand that is dedicated to making sure we do just that.
Shontay Lundy is the founder of Black Girl Sunscreen. Her brand was launched in Miami, Florida in 2016. She designed this sunscreen specifically for women and men of color. Our skin is very different and needs to be cared for differently. Her sunscreen is ultra-sheer, vegan, SPF 30, and cruelty free. The sunscreen is also infused with natural ingredients. (Avocado, jojoba, aloe, cocoa butter, and carrot juice.) Lundy’s brand is now valued at $5 million. She also offers a kid friendly sunscreen.
You can purchase Black Girl Sunscreen at Target or on BlackGirlSunscreen.com.
