This past weekend 15-year-old Cori “Coco” Gauff has made history yet again! Coco beat seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams for second time since Wilmendon in July at the Australian Opener in Melbourne Park. Guaff beat Williams 7-6, 6-3. A year ago Gauff ranked 687th in the world. Currently Gauff ranks number 67 in the world while Williams sits at number 55. All I can say is Williams better watch out because Guaff is on a roll.
Gauff may be young but she has her head in the game. “My mission is to be the greatest,” she said during a press conference. “That’s my goal, to win as many Grand Slams as possible. But for today, my mission was to win. I didn’t want to let the nerves come to me.”
Gauff did exactly what she came to do. She received overwhelming support from fans as she played. She stated, “I just want to say thank you guys, you guys were chanting my name and I only thought that would happen at the US Open.”
It is clear that Coco Gauff is here to stay and has made a name for herself in the world of tennis worldwide. If you want to watch highlights from Gauff and Williams’ tournament click below.
