I’m sure everyone has heard of Serena Williams. The long time tennis legend that is. However, this story is not about her, but rather her sister, Venus. Venus Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champ, faced off for what probably seemed like would be the easiest win of her career–a match against a 15-year-old. She was wrong.
The young girl who beat Williams is Cori “Coco” Gauff. She grew up inspired by the Williams sisters, and now she has beaten one of them. “Serena Williams has always been an idol, and Venus, I mean, they’re the reason I wanted to pick up a tennis racket,” Gauff told reporters.
Williams, who is 39 years old, went up against Gauff in England. Gauff beat Williams in two sets, both sets ending in a 6-4 victory. After the match, she put her hands up in disbelief as to what she had pulled off. Williams also showed her amazing sportsmanship and congratulated her. The crowd in England gave her a huge standing ovation because they saw what she had just done.
This was Gauff’s first ever Wimbledon match, while Williams has played over 100 and won 5 titles doing so. Gauff made headlines for becoming the youngest tennis player to qualify for Wimbledon in the open era. In an interview Gauff said, “I want to be the greatest.” This is great confidence to have at such a young age. She is proof that there is a younger generation coming to take over the world, including the sports one. Right now Gauff’s future is looking bright. Time will tell just how successful she is in the future. We’ll be watching too.
