On Wednesday, May 6th, students at Corliss High School gathered for a live recording of their student-led podcast “Teen Talk,” moderated by staff member Mr. Myles. The podcast features students from all grade levels engaging in debates and healthy conversations about relationships, school issues, and high school experiences. The guests for the special taping featured hosts from the “Gloss and Gossip” as well as the “Profiles” podcasts. For one hour, moderator Mr. Myles asked poignant questions on dating and relationships, such as: Is flirting cheating? Social media’s impact on prom and Valentine’s Day proposals; should you share your passwords to your phone or social media profiles with your spouse? Balancing friendships and new relationships, and much more.
The audience was extremely engaged, with both school staff and other students coming up to the podium to either ask questions to the panel or offer their own perspectives on the topics. Laughter and thought-provoking quotes filled the room, but everyone remained respectful even when they disagreed. At the end, seniors Keinya Esper and Cortez Collins shared their experiences of being a part of the broadcast program.
As a media production student, led by True Star Instructor Trenton Sapp, Keinya Esper says, “I love being a part of this program because you can socialize with people that you never thought you would socialize with. You learn new things, such as learning how to speak in front of people, become comfortable on camera, and even how to work cameras.” In the future, she plans to go to college and possibly minor in film or communications to further her expertise.
For Cortez Collins, he shared similar sentiments, though podcasting is new to him. “My experience in the program with Mr. Sapp has been amazing and fun. I’ve learned so much about cinematography, photography, lighting, and how to properly take pictures. I’ve also learned how to communicate and gain networking skills. It’s really just been a great and fun experience.”
