Lena Waithe, the creator and executive producer of “The Chi” is set to voice Office Spector in Disney’s new film Onward. This will be Disney’s first openly gay animated character. This is something that hasn’t been done in the history of Disney films.
The movie also stars Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as elf brothers who are going on an adventure to see if there is still a little magic left in their city in order to see their deceased father who died before they were too young to remember. The film’s director Dan Scanlon stated, “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world.”
Waithe shared a post to Instagram showing her support for the character.
The comments are nothing but support and it’s lovely. It’s important for children nowadays to grow up and see this level of representation in the media. Growing up many of us didn’t get that in the form of a kid friendly animation. It’s crucial that children understand the world we live in as well as the people in it. One thing that we must understand is that the times are constantly changing and at some point we must choose to move with it.
This won’t be the last time that Disney has representation of the LGBTQ+ community on the big screen. The Marvel Universe will soon be adding more LGBTQ+ characters according to CEO Kevin Feige.
I hope this film will help not only young children understand the LGBTQ+ community but for others to be more comfortable with seeing this portrayed in media fully rather than being hinted at. This movie will be the first of many to pave the way. Onward will be in theaters on March 8th. Go check it out!
