The Double Duty Classic recently took place at Guaranteed Rate Field, also known as the home of the Chicago White Sox. If you are unaware of what the Double Duty Classic, is let me help you. This event, named after Negro League standout Ted “Double Duty” Radcliffe, celebrates the best inner-city high school players in the country while honoring the negro leagues. This is also a day that allows the next generation’s top prospects an opportunity to shine in front of coaches, scouts and their community.
One thing that stood out this year was that the majority of the players selected were from Chicago.
Kenwood had about five players selected while Homewood Flossmor had about three
selected. Tailgating for the event started at 4:00 and people was enjoying the music while grabbing a bite to eat or they were talking and dancing. Once the game kicked off it was intense. Both teams,
West and the East, were scoreless in the first inning, but the West came and put three scores
on the board in the second.
East them battled back and scored two in the fourth inning. Both teams would end up scoring
back and forth, scoring one point in the fifth and sixth innings. Team West would then put the
icing on the cake by scoring their last point in the seventh inning and winning 6-4.
