FIRST STEP Fosters High School Fashion Designers

Excel High School students celebrate the end of their design course with a fashion show of their creations.

Excel High School students recently wrapped up the FIRST STEP COURSE, a pioneering initiative aimed at empowering inner-city youth in Chicago to excel academically, express their creativity, and address mental health challenges. Shaun Redwell and Trenell Adams, also known as fashion designer Teezy, spent 10 weeks teaching selective students at Excel the essence of fashion design. Redwell and Adams taught the students how to customize their own shoes and create an outfit to go with it.

Redwell stated, “We believe in and use the power of creativity to transform lives and communities. Through this program, we aim to not only cultivate the next generation of artists and designers, but also provide essential support and resources to help students overcome mental health challenges and achieve their full potential.” Redwell added, “Each student in this program was chosen by having good grades, attendance, and over good behavior; so you have to be on your ‘A’ game to join the program.”

The fashion show kicked off at 11:00 am this past Friday at Excel High School and it was full of energy. The show had five judges who were all successful in the fashion industry and the event was sponsored by the store DTLR. Each participant received a $100 gift card and medal from DTLR, but only three students came out on top. The third place winner, Amahri Heath, took home $500, second place winner Envy Hawkins took home $1500 and the first place winner, Keshawna Whitfield, walked away with $3000.

The fashion show was amazing and definitely inspired the youth to chase their dreams of becoming designers and starting their own fashion brands. For more information about FIRST STEP COURSE reach out to Redwell via Instagram at @_Redwell.
