True Star hosted its first From The ‘Go Fest Open Mic Finals Showcase, where Chicago youth displayed their talents to an audience and a panel of judges.

Starting back in December 2023, True Star began hosting open mics for youth across the city of Chicago so they could have a safe space and a place to showcase their talents. Over the course of the months leading up to now, talent has returned to True Star Headquarters to improve their skills and compete to win a shot at performing at From The ‘Go Fest this summer.

To the surprise of many of the artists performing at the showcase, everyone was given a golden ticket and a slot to perform at the fourth annual festival.

The selected artists for this summer’s line-up include Big Oxy, Cold Heart Cam, Dope Muzeik, Dwayne Neff, Jackpot Jigga, Juby Da God, Khari Ennui, MJB, Neicy Pooh, Tanisha Tarelle, Zion Ali, and Zia Jenaye. One of our featured artists, Z Saj, is a True Star junior staff member and will also be hitting the stage.

“What it would mean for me to perform at The ‘Go Fest is that everything I’ve been working towards is really finally coming into fruition. I came here so I can perform at From The ‘Go Fest and that’s what we’re doing,” said Z Saj.

Zion Ali, who appeared in Bronzeville: The Musical, also shared his thoughts about being a part of True Star’s summer event. “It would mean the world to me to [perform at ‘Go Fest] because my mission is to change the narrative for upcoming generations so we can change the stereotype of how people look at us.”

Everyone in the finals did an amazing job! Missed the showcase? Don’t worry! You can come out to support them at this year’s From the ‘Go Fest happening July 27 from 1 pm to 7 pm at the DuSable Museum Campus. You don’t want to miss this FREE festival!

From The ‘Go Fest is a festival made for youth by youth. The festival’s goal is to promote peace and positivity while stopping violence happening across the city. Uplifting youth is another goal of not only the festival, but True Star as a whole.

Expect to see more acts added to the lineup. For updates about the 2024 From The ‘Go Fest and previous festivals, visit fromthegofest.com and follow the From The ‘Go Instagram page.

Come for the culture, stay for the community. See you there!
