FTG Spotlight Feature: Juby DaGod

Juby DaGod is an up-and-coming rapper here in Chicago. He grew up in Roseland on the South Side of the city. Soon, Juby DaGod will be graduating from Gardner Webb University. He is one of the Open Mic Showcase winners to earn a spot to perform at the 2024 From The ‘Go Fest. Get to know this artist better

What does it mean for you to perform at the From the ‘Go Fest?

It means a lot, especially because in the last couple of years, I’ve come once as a worker, once as a fan, and then being able to perform there is a full circle moment.

How would you describe yourself as an artist?

I would describe myself as transparent, lit, and fiery. Most of my music comes from a real place of experience or a conversation. It comes from real-life things.

How did your passion for music begin?

I started singing in the church before I hit puberty and my voice was actually good. I started listening to Lil Wayne as a kid. It was this metaphor he said that put me on to rapping forever and made me want to actually do it.

Who are your musical influences?

My biggest influence is J Cole. He’s from the south and he went to New York. I’m from a city, Chicago, and went to North Carolina. I went from fast to slow, he went slow to fast. He wrote music that I feel like I would have written. Other than that, Lauryn Hill, Lil Wayne, and Kendrick Lamar.

How did you come up with your stage name?

My stage name actually came from basketball. When I was in high school my junior year, the seniors used to always clown the younger kids. They said my jump shot looked like an NBA one, that it was God-like. I changed it to Juby DaGod cause it flowed better.

What are your main goals for your music career?

I want to get a Grammy. I want to create music for movies and TV shows. I also do the video and film stuff, too; so if I could dip into both avenues at the same time… that’s a big dream of mine. I also want to be considered one of the greatest artists to ever touch a mic.

What artist would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Ruben Vincent. He’s from North Carolina and signed to Roc Nation. I would love to do a song with Lauryn Hill. GID. And I wanna do a song with Bryson Tiller and Brent Faiyaz.

What advice would you give to other emerging artists?

If you make music that you like doing, that’s all that matters. Don’t ever let somebody else’s view of your music dictate if you should do it or not. Never stop doing what you love because of somebody else.

Where do you hope to have the opportunity to perform one day?

I want to perform at Dreamville Fest so bad. I’ve been the last three years and it’s crazy how much I’ve progressed because of the festival. Rolling Loud too.

What has been the highlight of your musical career thus far?

My biggest accomplishment was meeting my best friend. BigMouf’Bo. Without music, I probably wouldn’t have met her and we wouldn’t be as close.

What are your hobbies outside of music?

I play basketball, that’s number one. I used to do gymnastics. I’m trying to become a voracious reader. I produce and make films too.
