Back in July, we told you about Kayla Onyeali and Miles Guichard, this year’s first and second place winners of the 2023 Flip The Script Fellowship pitch competition. Well, the time has come to see their concepts come to life.
On Saturday, October 14th, these short films will be displayed on the big screen at Chatham Cinema, located at 210 W. 87th St., between 3 pm and 6 pm.
To create the shorts, both Onyeali, 21, and Guichard, 21, received hands-on coaching from True Star mentors, including Eunice Shelley, a professional writing coach and the creator of Flip The Script. Each film has thought-provoking themes and amazing acting that leaves the viewers entertained and wanting more. Altering, originally titled Cross the Border, written and directed by Onyeali, is a psychological thriller that examines family dynamics, while Just In Time, by Guichard, will keep audiences laughing until the ending credits.
“Kayla is such a deep, introspective writer,” said Shelley. “She writes with courage and unapologetic honesty that will surely help her carve a path for herself in the film industry. Her eye for detail and her uncanny ability to create unexpected outcomes makes her projects a joy to produce.
“Miles brought dynamic storytelling skills and a powerful vision to life in his short comedy, Just In Time,” Shelley added. “From the very beginning, he leaned into each character and ensured the story took audiences on an enjoyable journey.
“Both of these writers brought leadership and creativity to set day after day. They led a crew of their peers and worked with industry professionals to create amazing projects we’re so proud of.”
Shelley recently surprised the two young writers/directors by showing them the posters for each of their movies. See their reactions below.
