If you’ve been keeping up with the news, you know all about Chicago’s latest “celebration.” That’s right, Rahm Emanuel decided not to run again for mayor for a third term.
But what does this have anything to do with you? Well, there might be a reason why everyone is celebrating and feeling relieved that Emanuel isn’t seeking reelection. Some people even went as far as to create a Facebook event that said “Celebrate the End of Rahm Emanuel’s Reign of Terror.” Yikes! This sounds pretty extreme. Emanuel has made a lot of good changes to Chicago. But he’s also made some mistakes.
CPS is one of those mistakes. If you’re a student in CPS then you’ve probably already been affected by some of his mistakes. Emanuel closed down 50 Chicago Public Schools, and almost all of them were on the South and West Sides. And those Chicago Teachers Strikes? Yeah, we’re all pretty familiar with missing days of school because of this. He funded a $50 million Cop Academy which so many people protested against because the money could be used for something better like schools, especially on the South and West sides.
And finally, we can’t forget about Laquan McDonald, another victim of police abuse. Now this one, Emanuel didn’t release the video of this shooting until after he won his second term. This, was what really angered a lot of people. There were so many protests and so many people calling him out to resign as mayor.
Emanuel, did do a lot of good. He made the school day longer, even for Pre-K and Kindergartners, he even increased the minimum wage. And he even made it possible for all CPS high school students to go to any City College of Chicago for free, if they had a 3.0 GPA. But, clearly, there was still a lot of support lacking in Black and Brown neighborhoods.
So now it’s up to you. There are a lot of candidates running for this year’s election. Get informed. Know your stuff and for all of you that are 18 and older, vote! Make a choice that’s right for you and your community.
