Last week as I was scrolling through my Twitter feed per usual, liking funny tweets and reading the comments of a controversial conversation, when I stumbled upon a short film that brought me to tears of joy.
Created by Sony Pictures Animation, the short film Hair Love was released on Instagram, YouTube, and Twitter last Thursday. The heart warming film consisting of Afro textured hair, an adorable little girl, a sassy cat, and a strong family connection, is well worth six minutes and forty-seven seconds of your time. Written by former NFL wide receiver, Matthew A. Cherry, the animated film is about the strengthening of a father and daughter bond after Dad has to learn how to do his daughter’s hair. He learns by watching a vlog created by his wife. After he completes the style, viewers find out that the mother has cancer and has lost her hair as a result of her illness.
I really enjoyed seeing this representation in the media. Hair is such a big part of Black love and Black life. To see kinky hair and darker complexions animated on the screen is very refreshing. Sony did a great job at capturing the expression of love and the bond that can be created after surpassing the fear of stepping into the unknown world of curls, clips, hair pins, and detangling combs.
On YouTube alone the short has been viewed nearly 2,000,000 times. Check it out for yourself below.
