Hey Chi-City! Virgil Abloh Wants To See Your Dopest Designs

The Illinois native and MCA challenge local youth with a design competition

If you consider yourself the creative type then pay attention. The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) is joining forces with Virgil Abloh, the designer behind the Off-White brand and artistic director of Louis Vuitton’s menswear collection, to launch the MCA Chicago x Virgil Abloh Design Challenge. The event is meant to challenge local youth ages 14 to 21 to stretch their imaginations to the fullest using the prompt: “Take something boring or broken and turn it into something extraordinary.”

Those up for the challenge are encouraged to submit designs in 2D and 3D form, which can include drawings, fashion pieces, objects, or architectural recorders via Instagram from June 10th to July 12th. Abloh, a native of Rockford, IL, is a jack of all trades when it comes to creativity. With a degree in civic engineering, a background in architecture, a passion for fashion, graphic and furniture design, and music Abloh is living an artist’s dream life. Just in case you didn’t know, he is the same guy that designed Kanye West’s sixth album cover Yeezus (2013) and the same guy that the designed the spanking new Off-White x Nike Air Force 1 “MCA” dropping soon.

Three to five winners of the challenge will be selected by Abloh himself along with other respectable leaders in the design field. All the winners will receive the following prizes:

*  “Meet and Greet” with Virgil Abloh, along with the other winners

*  Video produced by Instagram profiling the winner and their winning entry, which will be shown at the MCA

*  500-page catalogue of Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech” signed by Virgil Abloh

*  Two Virgil Abloh “artist collaboration” t-shirts

*  Exhibition-related hoodie

*  One-year “Household Membership” to the MCA that includes a tote bag designed by Virgil Abloh

The design challenge coincides with Abloh’s MCA exhibition Virgil Abloh: “Figures of Speech,” the first-ever museum showing for the genre-bending artist. If you’re 18 or under you can experience the exhibition for free during the museum’s youth-led events. For more info about the design challenge visit mcachicago.org/mcadesignchallenge.
