Four Black women are recreating what it means to truly have a “hot girl summer” and keep the cash flow rolling in. Those women are Keke Palmer, H.E.R. (Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson), Quinta Brunson and Issa Rae.
With the debut of Jordan Peele’s newest film NOPE, Keke Palmer has become the face of the #1 hit movie in America. Although, the majority of audiences have grown up watching Palmer’s fabulous career and solidifying her as a household name even since she had the lead role in “Akeelah and the Bee”, numerous critics are acknowledging this role in Peele’s film as her breakout moment. Palmer’s star is also shining bright because of her role in the Disney animation Lightyear where she plays Izzy Hawthorne. Despite fans already being obsessed with Palmer’s acting career with over 100 credits, it’s beautiful to see that she’s receiving even more well deserved recognition.
Another major milestone for women of color in the entertainment industry is singer H.E.R landing the role of “Belle” in ABC’s Beauty and the Beast 30th anniversary special. After Halle Bailey landed the lead role of “Ariel” in the upcoming The Little Mermaid, I knew that this was a groundbreaking moment for Black women. This not only opened the door for women like H.E.R to play important roles within the Disney princess franchise, but also gives other young women and men the ability to watch someone portray a role that looks like them. This has definitely caused a beneficial shift in what is considered “traditional” and expanded the playing field for actors and actresses to land roles.
Quinta Brunson has officially secured the role of “Oprah” in Weird: The Al Yankovic Story alongside Daniel Radcliffe, Rachel Wood, and more. Brunson, a now Emmy nominated actress/creator, has been booked and busy and I love to see that she’s excelling within her career. As another season of “Abbott Elementary” gets taped, I’ve never been more happy to see her more in the spotlight. According to today.com., “Let’s get #weird” Brunson, 32, posted a retweet from Film Updates, which shared a picture of her, in Oprah costume, standing next to Daniel Radcliffe as Yankovic.”
The fourth hot girl on the list is Issa Rae. The “Insecure” creator has a new show on her hands called “Rap Sh!t”. Audiences are buzzing all over social media about her creative mind and how each product she puts out is incredibly good. HBO Max has picked up the eight-episode order and only continues to solidify Rae more as a star producer. A review of the series will be uploaded shortly on our platforms, but if you have seen the series please make sure to drop your reaction in the poll below!
For all four of these women, it’s definitely shaping up to be a hot girl summer in the best way.
