How The CPS Strike Benefits You

Associated Press

A few days off may seem super sweet for CPS students, but y’all are forgetting why this work break is important. We all have that one teacher or counselor that listens to all our problems whether they are major or not. We know a teacher who will always make sure you’re on top of your ish. We all know of one teacher who is dedicated to making their classes engaging and fun. And if you haven’t had any of those experiences, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) is fighting to make that high standard of education a reality for every single student in CPS.

Specifically, CTU members are striking because they want smaller class sizes, increased prep time, and more support for students. Ever had a packed class where the teacher can’t even cater to you one-on-one? Teachers want to eliminate this problem by regulating class sizes, so they can focus on each students’ needs and abilities. You may not think twice about asking for extra help after school or during a teacher’s free period, but that takes time away from their lunch and prep time for classes. CPS needs more resources and staffing, so students can still be acknowledged without putting too much pressure on their teachers. They also want to see full-time nurses, psychologists, and social workers in schools to tend to students’ as many have trauma, disabilities, and life challenges. If you haven’t noticed already, the teachers have some pretty valid points and they should be listened to. At the end of the day, they are some of the most important people in society and we owe it all to them.

The teachers are striking to get a better environment for the growth of students in Chicago, so think twice when you think this is just a free couple of days out of school. They are striking for us to have a better education and it looks like they won’t stop till Chicago Public Schools are improved tremendously.
