I recently had a chat with 2008 American Idol finalist Syesha Mercado about life after the show and what’s she been up to recently. Here’s what I asked her:
1.When did you start singing?
I’ve been singing since I was 2. My mother sang and coming from a musical family, I did a lot of community events, school plays and I went to a performing arts school and studied theatre in college in Miami. I wanted to put out an album. People told me to go audition for American Idol so I left school to do a reality show then I went back to school but my friends still encouraged me to audition. I got a flash pass to get in front of the line and I received the first gold ticket in Miami.
2.What have been some of your biggest challenges on Broadway?
Whenever I pursue my music full-time, I get a call from the Broadway company. I’ve been working full-time since 2007 so I don’t see my family often. The biggest challenge is balancing my music career with my Broadway career because they both require a lot of energy.
3.Tell us what the Book Of Mormon is about and what viewers can expect of it and what role you play.
It’s from the creators of South park so there’s a lot of humor and it’s not a kid show. The story is about 2 Mormons who embark on missions once they turn 19 to Uganda for 2 years. They deal with AIDS, poverty and they deal with a lot of things . My character that I play is the hopeful, optimistic one. She’s the one that has the hope in the village. Basically, this is like a religious satire.
4.If you were not singing and acting, what else would you be doing?
I’m an artist. I love to paint and draw and I even have a website that’s being renovated, where I will be selling t-shirts and canvas.
5.What are some of your goals that you have yet to accomplish?
I would like to be part of a number one best-selling, blockbuster movie. I would also like to be a lead role in a film and have a clothing line and an art company.
6.With such an amazing voice, what are some things that you do in order to suppress stress before a show?
I try to get my head in the right place and I try to cool down and prepare myself to go on stage. I make sure I know my lines and the words to the songs . I also like to listen to Joel Olsteen because his messages are powerful and I also like to pray or meditate. I also like to listen to Lady Gaga and Beyonce. It works!
7.What three words would you use to describe your personality?
Goofy, kind and caring.
8.What are some things that you learned from American Idol, that you apply to your career today?
I learned to have a good work ethic and that sometimes you need to put in more work to be good on stage because you have to give the audience what they’re looking for. I also learned how to balance my personal life with my career because during American Idol, we had to do a lot of interviews and press and do red carpet events while keeping in touch with my family and staying connected to them.
