Is Polio The New Health Threat?

Polio is one of those diseases from back in the day that we seemed to have under control. Or do we? A resident from the state of New York might beg to differ.

As polio continues to spread, New York has declared this issue a “state of emergency.” Health officials say, “for every one case of paralytic polio observed, there may be hundreds of other people infected.” On Friday, wastewater in Albany N.Y. on Long Island detected a growing community of poliovirus which is the reason they declared this a state emergency.

Already, Gov. Kathy Hochul issued the executive order that increases resources available so that the state can combat this viral spread. The new sample that they found in August from Nassau County was found to be genetically linked to the case of paralytic polio identified in Rockland County just north of New York City earlier this summer. These findings were the first in nearly a decade. The polio virus has also been detected in wastewater samples from neighboring Orange and Sullvian counties, including those from New York City.

Poliomyelitis or Polio for short, gets its name from a poliovirus which is a disabling and life threatening disease. Many people who are infected with the poliovirus don’t become sick or show any symptoms. On the flipside, the ones who do get sick often develop paralysis which is usually fatal. Polio usually affects children under the age of 5 years old. It affects your muscles, prohibits growth and can make you feel nauseous, faint and have your muscles quiver.

Now, I know you may be thinking what this means for the country, and if this polio outbreak requires another lockdown, but to answer these questions briefly, it is being controlled by Health Departments so that there is no further spread and you do not need to lock yourself up at home. In order to protect yourself from this deadly virus, Health Commissioner Mary Bassett urged that everyone who resides in New York ensures that they are up to date with their polio vaccinations. She continued this statement by saying, “I urge New Yorkers to not accept any risk at all. Polio immunization is safe and effective-protecting nearly all people against disease who receive the recommended doses.” It is said that this state of emergency expires a month from now on Oct. 9th 2022.
