Leo High School’s all-boys choir is giving Chicago something to be proud about. After being featured on the NBC hit show “AGT”, aka “America’s Got Talent”, the choir has now advanced to the semi-finals after singing the song “Centuries” by the Fall Out Boys. The high energy that they bring to all the chart-topping songs they perform has made the choir a ground favorite.
This South Side all-boys catholic school choir started getting notoriety from social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook. Their posted videos featured their covers of popular songs they performed across the city at locations such as Navy Pier, at the Chicago White Sox’s stadium, Rate Field, and even on the day-time talk show “The Jennifer Hudson Show”. While all the members are gifted with singing ability, they could’ve gotten this far without the help of choir director LaDonna Hill, lovingly referred to as Mrs.Hill.
Hill has been directing Leo’s choir for 19 years. Before she was directing there, she studied at Chicago State University. She has a bachelor’s degree in Arts and a master’s degree in Biblical Studies.
The choir debuted on the 20th season of “AGT” back in June. Throughout the episode there were many acts, but the Leo choir stood out. The choir performed “Born This Way” by The Scripts. The audience was moved by the performance with applauds and standing ovations. The judges were also touched, with judge Sofia Vergara saying, “You guys deserve to be on this stage.”
The choir also blew their competition out the water with their performance of the hit “Believer” by Imagine Dragons. Adding tumbling to their act has only leveled them up.
Back home on Chicago’s South Side, family and friends are excited for the choir by having watch parties since they couldn’t be there in person. Even though they are performing across the country, homework and tests must be completed. The students are doing online schooling while they are away from rehearsing.
