Lil Nas X Breaks Records And Stays Relevant

Was I the only one that thought we’d be done talking about Lil Nas X for at least the rest of the summer? I was obviously wrong, because this week he made history. On Monday, Billboard officially announced that his singleOld Town Road” has broken the record for the longest streak at number one on the Hot 100 at 17 weeks. This is a huge deal considering how much criticism his song received from country and rap artists. He essentially made a song as a joke and it went viral which is unheard of. He definitely deserves this recognition for the strides that he has made the past few months.

Lil Nas X was primarily able to be at the top for so long, because of how relatable he is. His fame was almost immediate, so he is still that guy who was sleeping on his sister’s couch and running a famous Nicki Minaj fan page a couple months ago. He uses memes that everyone actually likes and he just always finds a way to keep himself relevant. He did it with “Old Town Road,” because people may be irritated with the song by now, but the kids are obsessed. With apps like TikTok and DubSmash, the “yee-haw” challenges make “Old Town Road” more than just a funny song. There’s culture behind it now. Lil Nas X is a trendsetter and we will probably still be hearing a lot about him from now on.
