The 31st Annual Critics Choice Awards, held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, became a celebration of Black talent across film and television. Chelsea Handler returned as host for the fourth year, with the ceremony broadcast live on E! and USA Network.
Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” made a major statement, with Black American actor and musician Miles Caton winning Best Young Actor/Actress for his role as Sammie Moore. The win marked a breakthrough moment for the rising talent and added to the film’s strong showing throughout the night, reinforcing Coogler’s influence as one of Hollywood’s most important filmmakers. “Sinners,” which led with 17 nominations, also won in the categories of Best Original Screenplay (Coogler), Best Casting (Francine Maisler), and Best Score (Ludwig Göransson). Coogler lost in the Best Director category to Paul Thomas Anderson (One Battle After Another).
Television brought more powerful wins. Janelle James, the Black actress and comedian, took home Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her standout work on ABC’s “Abbott Elementary”. The show continues to be one of television’s most acclaimed comedies, and James’s win highlighted her scene-stealing presence on the series.
In drama, actor Tramell Tillman earned Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his compelling performance on Apple TV+’s “Severance”. His win recognized the depth he brings to the critically praised sci-fi thriller.
