True Star is hitting the ground running with the workshop series once again! This time, a workshop was hosted dedicated to learning the fundamentals of filmmaking.
Taking place at True Star’s headquarters in Bronzeville, this free workshop, hosted by True Star alum and cinematographer Kayla Sullers, gave young participants an introduction to filmmaking and cinematography.
“It was super intimate, it was engaging. I hope everybody did get the chance to learn and walk away with something,” Sullers said. “It felt like I was back in my True Star days just working with the youth and teaching the next generation of leaders and the next generation of creatives the tools and the resources that they need to get great.”
Attendees ranged from novice cinematographers to those with some years of experience and background in filmmaking. Regardless of experience, everyone was engaged and attentive.
“The main thing that I want people to walk away with is just being able to train their eyes to just see what certain compositions look like, why certain lights were used, why certain colors were chosen and just be able to see a specific breakdown to a certain scene,” Sullers said.
Attendees were recording content for their own platforms and even got the chance to use equipment at the headquarters to practice and workshop with industry-grade items like cameras, lights and monitors.
“Every presenter here wants to see you succeed so they can give you information on how to make your life better,” said Ean Alphonse, a freshman at North Central College.
