My Top Five of ‘Chromokopia’

Fans have been constantly asking Tyler, the Creator for new music since the release of his Grammy-winning album, Call Me If You Get Lost, in 2021. However, Chromokopia, written, produced, and arranged by the musical genius himself, Tyler Okonma, has been getting mixed reviews since it recently dropped.

As an avid listener of Tyler’s music, I was ecstatic to learn about the releases of his newest album. After listening to it a few times, I have picked some of my favorite songs and ranked them. Keep reading to find out my top five.

  1. St. Chroma

It sets a great base for the rest of the album. I also really enjoyed the layers on this song and how they continue to build all the way until Daniel Caesar comes onto the track, which I was super happy about.

  1. Darling, I

I liked the beat on this song, it  reminded me of some of Pharrell’s work, which comes as no surprise with him being one of Okonma primary inspirations. Later I found out one of the most popular songs created by Pharrell, “Drop It Like It’s Hot” was sampled. Teezo Touchdown complemented the song very well and I liked his groovy/laid back approach on the chorus.

  1. Sticky

Like many, “Sticky” quickly became one of my favorites off the album with features from Sexyy Red, Glorilla, and Lil Wayne. This song contains a sample from a group of cheerleaders that I really enjoyed, but the horns section of the song is what solidified this song’s spot in my top five. The horns section of this song has caught the attention of many with them adding that they can’t wait to hear HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges) play the song. I’m sure this would be an honor to Tyler since he shared his new love for marching bands during his rollout performance in Georgia.

  1. Like Him

The emotions are conveyed very well throughout the song. The addition of Lola Yongs voice was the cherry on top. This song is essentially a conversation between Tyler and his mother after she reveals his father wanted to be in his life after years of thinking he was abandoned by him. This song has sparked a trend on TikTok with people sharing photos of themselves and their father.

  1. Noid

Immediately the punk/rock ‘n roll intro caught my attention. After viewing the credits I found out Willow Smith and one of my favorite guitarists, Thundercat, did some work on the track, which made me fall in love with the song even more. It was inspired by Tyler’s relationship with paparazzi and the lack of privacy he faces as a celebrity. When I listened to the song I was definitely able to hear this through the song and in my opinion Smith’s background vocals really helped to tie in that feeling of paranoia.

Honorable Mention

*Thought I was Dead

Schoolboy and Santiago’s flow on this song really stood out to me. The production of the song was amazing of course, and I loved his shoutout to US Open Winner Cori Dione “Coco” Guaff, “You ain’t Coco Guaff you can’t serve me.”

Overall this was a great album and if you haven’t had a chance to listen to it yet, you should check it out. If you have checked it out, let us know your reaction below.
