My Top Three Tips for Adjusting to College

The first week of college can be pretty overwhelming. Believe me, I know. It’s a huge change from high school, and we don’t even really realize it until we step foot into that new environment. The pressure is way more on studying and turning homework in on time. It’s a double-edged sword: we get treated like adults, but we see the consequences of failing to act like one, too.

Here are three tips on how college can be less stressful for you.

Tip One: Fixing your schedule. I didn’t even think about my schedule until I had to experience it first hand. I had classes ending at 9:00 P.M., and going back home in downtown Chicago at night made me realize I had to make some changes quickly.

If your schedule is built for you by your school, email your advisor and ask for classes closer together, and earlier in the day. That way, you don’t have long gaps in between classes, and you can go home when it’s still light out. If you have to build your schedule yourself, keep these things in mind.

Tip Two: Your teachers aren’t your enemies. Yeah, you need to get homework in on time, but teachers aren’t actively trying to sabotage you. When my bus was late, I started panicking because I was going to be late for class. When I got there 20 minutes late, my teacher hadn’t even done attendance yet.

If you need an extension on your homework, email them. They’re more than likely to help you out. Keep in mind the more rigid structure of college, but also think about how your professors can help you stay on track. Remember that communication is key. Oftentimes, they’re more than willing to help.

Tip Three: Make things easier for yourself. Don’t wait until the last minute to do a homework assignment. Do it after class, so things don’t pile up for you later. Don’t wait until the last minute to head to class, either. Your teachers might be cool with you being late a couple times, but best not make a habit out of it. Get to class early, and if you have to, you’ll have time to do that homework assignment from yesterday.

These are just some of the things I’ve been working on to make my college life easier. Do you think I should add more tips? Let me know!
