I’m not sure what to think about or who to blame for the loss against the Packers. I said in a previous article that the Bears would need to pull off a miracle in the last six weeks of the NFL season in order to make the playoffs. And the first step to do that was to win out the rest of our games. Well, that didn’t happen. While the Bears can still technically get into the playoffs if the Bears beat the Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, beat Minnesota in week 17, the Rams lose against the 49ers and Cardinals, and if Green Bay beats Minnesota in week 16, that is all very unlikely. Specifically, the Bears beating the Chiefs and the Rams losing to the Cardinals is a far cry from being likely to happen. So with the season basically over for the Bears, let’s see the two main things the Bears can improve on in order to have success next season.
Making Upgrades to the O-line
It’s no secret that the Bears have a pretty bad offensive line. From the eye test alone, one can see that Mitchell Trubisky struggles getting set in the pocket more often than any quarterback would like. Due to the constant pressure caused by a lack of quality play from the offensive line, Trubisky, or whatever quarterback is playing, becomes more prone to mistakes and has to be focused on making sure a sack doesn’t happen instead of focusing on making the right pass. The O-line doesn’t do any favors at all for the running game either. While David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen are two extremely talented running backs, it’s difficult for either of them to get it going because they struggle to have any success with going anywhere when the offensive line can’t block for their life.
A Younger Secondary
The loss of Bryce Callahan was much bigger than most Bears fans could have expected. With him gone, the Bears’ cornerback depth, while good, became very slow. Specifically, Prince Amukamara, who has been burned by faster receivers often throughout the year, especially when he is assigned a slot receiver. I don’t suggest getting rid of Amukamara, but I do suggest looking into the draft for a younger corner.
