The new movie Piece By Piece hits theaters this Friday and it’s truly a must watch. It is a creative telling of Pharrell Williams’ story using Lego animation as its medium. This led to a visually stunning movie using amazing music to aid the storytelling, leading to a very vibrant and engaging movie.
The movie is structured like a colorful documentary with narration being in the background the majority of the time. The Lego versions of Morgan Neville, the director, and Williams are engaged in an interview, allowing Williams to literally tell his story from his own lips. Other well-knowns in the movie include Jay Z, Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, and Kendrick Lamar.
I found the movie to be very intimate because we saw the story play out in Lego form, but the narration from the interview added an emotional dimension. Williams breathed life into his story by speaking from his soul and provided his unique perspective on all of the hit songs we know and love.
The insight was truly special, as even the biggest of Williams fans can learn something they didn’t know about the multi-generational hit-maker. Questions were raised as to why the movie went the Lego route, but after watching it you’ll understand that he couldn’t have told it in any other way.
The Legos add to the theme of building towards something every day literally piece by piece. On top of that, the Legos lead some immersive animation keeping you engaged with the mini music videos you get throughout the movie. Go experience the fun yourself this Friday, October 11th.
