When I graduated high school, my teacher gave my class a piece of advice that stuck with me: subscribe to magazines.
Online shopping can be super enticing. Amazon recommends you something, and next thing you know, youโre adding it to your cart. Unfortunately, online shopping can be very expensive, too. What if I told you you could get something just for you in the mail every month, at a fraction of the price of online shopping?
Thatโs right, magazines are the solution! Thereโs hundreds of fun magazines out there, just for you. Here are some fun ones to check out:
Poetry Magazine: Published by the Poetry Foundation right here in Chicago, Poetry Magazine sends you a new issue over the course of 10 months for just $30 a year. You get reading material to last you till the next issue, full of beautiful poetry.
Black Warrior Review: Maybe you want more than poetry. BWR offers not only poetry, but also short fiction, nonfiction, comics, and art. It does come out less frequently than other magazines, with only two issues per year, but you only pay $25 a year, and you have more content to look forward to.
Okay, okay. I had to mention at least a couple literary magazines. A writer canโt help it. When these are all that fill the shelves of your school, you grow fond of them.
Do you like superheroes? G-Mart, a comic book chain located in Chicago, features cheap monthly subscriptions. Depending on what comic run you sub to, it can be under $3 a month, for a brand new comic in the mail.
Thereโs more than just literary magazines and comics. Surf the internet yourself to find the right magazine for you! If you find one for a cheap price, youโll get the thrill of getting something in the mail, without spending too much.
Do you have a magazine you sub to? Let me know!
