Tonight is thee night for the big debate. Are you ready?
This will be the first time the American people will hear from VP Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump in the same setting. This long-awaited debate has many on the edge of their seats as Trump has pulled out numerous times. Both candidates will be asked about their policies and plans for America. True Star asked Chicago youth if they plan to watch and what they would like to hear from the candidates. Here’s what they had to say.
“I plan on watching because I want to become more aware of what’s occurring in the US. I want to become more knowledgeable on the issues facing America. …I want Kamala Harris to talk about Project 2025.” — London Dawkins, 16, a junior at Morgan Park High School.
“I want to watch the debate to hear what the candidates will offer Americans and why they feel they’re qualified. I want to hear Kamala’s plans for America and what she can offer the African American community.” — Eternity Wilson, 16, a junior at Morgan Park High School
“I want to hear from both sides and hear their real plans for the country. I want to know what they’ll do and what they’ll change. … I want to hear how she will implement policies such as taxes and homeless prevention. I also want her to introduce new topics as well.” — Aaron Johnson, 16, a junior at Morgan Park High School
“I plan on watching to gain more insight on each candidate’s platform. I want to hear how she addresses the gun epidemic that’s occurring in our country.” — Jesse Rodgers, 16, a junior at Morgan Park High School
Personally, I want both candidates to give their opinion regarding gun safety legislation following another recent school shooting. I would also want Kamala Harris to talk about what this historic victory would mean to her, if elected.
These are some perspectives shared from local Chicago teens. The debate will air on the ABC network at 8:00 pm CST. I hope you will tune in to gain clarity of your own.
