The Chicago Bears are now the king of losing in the most heartbreaking way. We’re currently on a six game losing streak with four out of six losses being one-score games. If you watch the games it genuinely feels like a curse because the team seems to be allergic to winning competitive games. However, the more we lose, the clearer the problem becomes.
It was our head coach Matt Eberflus the whole time, which became crystal clear after our game with the Lions on Thanksgiving. After a fourth quarter abomination on turkey day, Eberflus was relieved of his duties.
Picture this, Bears are down three with 15 seconds left in the fourth and the ball is only four yards away from field goal range. Instead of calling a timeout to kick the field goal and tie the game, our offense runs a play using up all the time and loses the game.
This was the real situation that happened in our Thanksgiving game against the Lions. It was such a poor performance from the coach and it literally cost us the game, but I’d say the problem is even deeper than that.
The Bears have been penalized 78 times this season so far. Every single game day I’m watching the refs call flags on my team. I used to blame the refs but at some point this becomes a serious coaching problem.
Four out of six losses in this losing streak were within one score and to me that’s a coaching problem as well because the players are keeping up making games with amazing teams super close. At the end of the day however, we don’t come out with a victory.
This leads to fans screaming why, because we see our players doing what they need to do, but we still can’t come out with a win. This isn’t the case anymore because now the problem is clear as day after the fourth quarter blunder on the day of thankfulness.
Now the problem is gone with the head coach getting fired mid season, which has never happened before in franchise history. It was 100% needed though and the feeling is unanimous, everyone wanted Eberflus gone. The Bears safety, Jaquan Brisker, said, “God don’t make mistakes,” after hearing the news, which is hilarious and speaks volumes to how the players feel.
Now that we found the problem and got rid of him, we can look to the future. Thomas Brown, the newly appointed Offensive Coordinator, was just promoted to interim head coach. Brown’s been working wonders and is a big reason these games have been so competitive.
Next week we hope to end our losing streak as we play against the 49ers with no Eberlfus. It’s a huge change to the team, and it may disrupt some dynamics but it had to happen, and hopefully it leads to a major turnaround for the Bears.
