Bears’ fans are going through a very tough time as the beloved Chicago Bears are on a three-game losing streak going from a very dominant 4-2 to a mediocre 4-5. It’s been tragic because our offense has been completely absent despite having a magnitude of weapons including DJ Moore, Keenan Allen and DeAndre Swift.
The Bears haven’t scored a touchdown in two games, putting some serious heat on the coaching staff, specifically Matt Eberflus the head coach. With the way Chicago has been playing, fans knew actions had to be taken leading to Eberflus firing the offensive coordinator, Shane Waldron.
Stepping up to the OC position is Thomas Brown, the passing coordinator who said he’s “excited” to take on this high pressure endeavor. Brown has said, “Pressure to me is a privilege. That means people expect something positive from you.”
It’s good to hear confidence in our new play caller, but the positivity that we expect from him is immense when you look at the rest of our schedule. It’s no secret that the Bears have the hardest schedule in the entire league, with our rivals, the Green Bay Packers, being our next game. After the Packers we have to battle the teams in our division, the NFC North, which is the best division in the league this season.
Brown has a very uphill battle but he’s off to a good start, as he addressed the team with plenty of positive energy this past Wednesday. Star receiver, DJ Moore, has stated, “To hear him up there in front of the whole team, it was amazing. He brings a lot of juice, a lot of energy.” Hearing that from Moore is remarkable because he’s shown a lot of disdain towards the current state of the offense.
The biggest question now is: “What will the relationship between Brown and Caleb Williams look like?” As of now, the two haven’t interacted much with Williams saying, “We haven’t really talked much throughout this time. Just because we haven’t been in the position to be having many conversations.”
A big part of Brown’s job is building that relationship with Williams, which sounds like a tall ask, but the Bears’ quarterback coach, Kerry Joseph, believes they can click sooner rather than later. Joseph has said, “With Thomas’ command, his voice, his attention to detail, we’re all going to fall in line from that, and Caleb is so strong mentally that he will be able to make that adjustment.”
The Bears’ future is definitely uncertain and difficult, but maybe this new offensive coordinator is the spark we need to compete this season. The Super Bowl may not be in our realm of conversation, but we refuse to be counted out.
