Black horror is definitely a thing now and The Woman in the Yard, which is listed under that genre, is a must see that takes a turn when you find out what it’s really about. Warning, if you haven’t seen it yet, there might be spoilers.
The Woman in the Yard can be perceived scary, but in reality it’s not. If you pay close attention and focus on the message, the movie is more of a reality check and awareness about mental health and how it could affect your daily living.
The movie is about a family that has moved into a fixer-up farm house. The story only contains five characters: the husband David, played by Russell Hornsby, his wife Ramona, played by Danielle Deadwyler, along with their two kids Taylor and Annie, played by Peyton Jackson and Estella Kahiha. And let’s not forget, the Woman, played by Okwui Okpokwasili. David dies at the beginning of the film and the wife Ramona has an injured leg that she need crutches to walk with. Throughout the film Ramona son is disobedient and always argues with his mom and overall doesn’t listen to what she says.

When a random woman appears in the yard Taylor still doesn’t listen as his mom begins to become extremely irritated and angry at him. Throughout the story Taylor find out originally how his father died and he begins to turn on his mother. Throughout the movie it shows many ways Ramona thought of killing herself along with her family, but she soon realizes that the woman in the yard is there because of her.
Ramona prayed for strength but didn’t make it clear what strength she was looking for. In the film its perceived as she was praying for strength to move on from David’s death but she really was praying for the strength to end her life which is why the woman showed up to help her follow through with her initial desire. The film shows how depression can really take a toll on your mental health and shows signs on how to catch depression symptoms.
Overall, I would say it’s definitely worth watching.
