TikTok Filter Saves Lives

By now, you might have seen dozens of people use the watermelon filter on TikTok, but do you know what it actually does, and what it means?

Well, as you’ve probably heard by now, Israel has been on a military offensive on the area in the Middle East called the Gaza Strip, a place for Israel to relocate Palestininans living in Israel. The military group called Hamas is the governing body for Palestine. Since Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,400 people, according to Time Magazine, and taking 200 people hostage, Israel began bombing the Gaza Strip, killing around 14,000 Palestinians. Of those people, 10,000 of them were women and children, according to a report by The New York Times.

That was just a really simple summary of the conflict, and you should definitely feel free to do more research on your own if you’re curious to learn more about it.

But what are these filters? Users on TikTok have been sliding a watermelon around the screen, saying it’s in support of Palestine. Well, the watermelon has been a symbol of Palestinian resistance since the late 60’s, the colors matching the red, black, white, and green of their flag.

This trend was first started by Jourdan Johnson, a creator on the platform. Using TikTok’s Effect Creator program, every time the filter is used, the revenue goes directly to Johnson, who plans to  donate it to charities bringing relief to the Palestinians.

As of when Time published its article, the filter has been in over six million videos, and made over $14,000.

This is a really easy way to donate to a good cause. Regardless of the way you might feel about the conflict, the people of the Gaza Strip have been ravaged by constant bombing, blowing up schools and hospitals. They’ll need all the support they can get, and you can help give them that.
