With graduations and finals underway or over for many, the end of May signifies the beginning of summer. Whether you’re ready to catch those rays or not, the city is opening up and Chi Summer is on the way! I’ve been keeping an eye out for the freshest trends in social media and street style, and gathered a comprehensive roundup for the upcoming season. Check out these summer style must-haves!
*Statement Sunglasses: As more and more retro trends come back into style, I propose bold sunglasses that pop! Whether it’s a fun cat eye or eccentric silhouette, or bright colors that shine against dark lenses, sunglasses can truly make an outfit. For a safer pick, go with white round frames, or try tinted lenses for a specific color scheme.
*More Monochrome: Speaking of color schemes, monochrome is on the rise. Layering may be tough in the warmer months, but you can still be tasteful with accessories galore. Coordinating shades of one color (think blue, white, pink) can be a way of appearing more put together and classy while combining pieces that complement your tones. Personally, I’m a purple kind of gal, so I may wear a lavender tank top with some eggplant shorts, and burgundy sandals with lavender earrings to put it all together. Try taking an undertone color quiz or examining your closet to see what colors you wear most, and build from there!
*Just Sorts: Sometimes oldies are goodies. A pair of well-fitted and quality denim jean shorts are the ultimate summer staple in terms of comfort and style. You can dress them up or down in many ways, and color washes make them even more versatile palette wise. A plain white tank top or tee, or colorful tie dye tee make great pairs with this item. Quick tip: if you have too-big or too-short jeans, chop off the legs and you have a DIY pair of cutoffs! Repurposing always gets you bonus style points.
*Light Linens: Whether the Windy City lives up to its name this summer or not, it can be universally agreed that comfort is key on a hot summer day. Thankfully, light fabrics like linens and chiffons are the perfect solutions! Whether you opt for a sundress or light tee, linen fabrics are breathable and wick well with sweat.
*Prints That Pop: Whether you go for an eye catching bag or printed sneaker, patterns are the move this summer. A personal favorite of mine is polka dots, and if you want more of a beachy vibe, go for chevron. Patterns can be a fun way to spice up your fits, but remember that there can always be too much of a good thing. Be tasteful with what colors and solids you pair with them, and you’ll be set for a successful summer wardrobe.
*Flawless Florals: A timeless classic that is perfect for spring to summer transitions, you can never go wrong with florals. A spare print on a shirt or dress, or even organic blossoms as accessories in hair or corsages all freshen up an outfit with ease. Remember to find your colors, and search for blooms within those shades!
*Cool Crochets: Last but certainly not least, crochets are the top trend of the summer! Whether quarantine left you with a new hobby and copious amounts of yarn or not, crochet is a way to introduce texture and light to your clothing. Either start looking for patterns to weave on your own, or shop trendy boutiques who have summer collections in stock already. As always, stay safe and stay cute!
