Yesterday marked the last day of True Star’s 2023 Summer Session. After From The ‘Go, we needed an event to wrap things up, announcing the end of a great season for True Star. Taking place at the Museum of Contemporary Art, students of all programs were able to gather together to observe and analyze the Gary Simmons art exhibit “Public Enemy”. Students also discussed what we learned from the past session and presented those things to the group. Here’s how it went:

First, we arrived at the MCA and took the first portion of our time viewing the Gary Simmons exhibit. It was beautiful, and portrayed different ideas regarding race and socioeconomic class via chalk, charcoal, and acrylic paintings along with some physical memoirs. As we walked around, we got to discuss the meaning of the images and what they meant to us.

After that, we had a quick lunch in a conference room, courtesy of the MCA. We ate and caught up with our friends and co-workers, then started the acknowledgements and presentations. So much was done this summer from all programs. Journalism members took a trip to Iowa to further their writing skills, podcasting added videos to their series, Flip The Script worked on two short films, social media, digital marketing, and graphic design all created eye-catching content for our social media platforms, and photography learning how to navigate the camera and take quality photos (honorable mention to the Street Team ambassadors.) Finally, multiple students going into college got scholarships for all their hard work and dedication to the company.

Next session will be better than ever, and with 2024 coming around the corner, True Star has nothing but great things in store for the youth of Chicago. True Star has so many programs to choose from, and you can view them all at truestarmedia.org. Make sure to register for the next session and start your future career in media with our help. See you all in the fall!
