I’m positive I speak for all Chicagoans when I say Summertime Chi is the most highly anticipated time of year. From pier visits to Italian ice dates with friends, there isn’t anything quite like a Chicago summer. Aside from creating memories unlike any other, the Windy City offers a plethora of opportunities during the season, where youth can step into their creative bag.
As youth and young adults, we are hardly ever compensated to express our creativity and innovative skills. True Star is one of the only Chicago organizations that offers both employment and training; and their alumni tend to occupy roles in media jobs, internships, and prestigious college programs. If you’re between the ages of 16 and 24, currently living in Chicago, and want to be paid for hands-on training while building a portfolio aligned with your aspirations, then True Star has you covered.
For six weeks, young people will learn skills, hear from experts, and gain real-world experience, that can be added to a professional portfolio or resume. The Digital Media and Podcasting & Content Creation programs will meet Monday – Thursday from 10:00AM – 3:30PM, while the From The ‘Go Fest program will meet Tuesday – Friday from 12:00PM – 5:00PM. These are paid opportunities, made possible through our partnership with Chicago Youth Works.
This summer, True Star is offering three varieties of work experience.
The Digital Media Institute (South Side Team)
In the Digital Media Institute, participants will learn the fundamentals of video production including camera basics, lighting, and shot composition. Stars will also level up storytelling skills by producing short form content, conducting interviews, and doing event coverage. Through this program, participants will work with professional equipment and create content on mobile devices for their portfolios. This program will be held at True Star Studios in Bronzeville. You must be age 16-18 to participate. Click here to fill out the application.
Podcasting & Content Creation (West Side Team)
Our Podcasting & Content Creation Program out West will take place at the BBF Center. Participants will learn to host our podcast show, interview guests, and do audio storytelling. You get the chance to record episodes, edit with industry-standard software, and learn how show concepts are cultivated from scratch. You must be age 16-18 to participate. Click here to fill out the application.
From the ‘Go Planning Crew
The From the ‘Go Planning Crew will be responsible for the day-to-day task that come with preparing for True Star’s annual From the ‘Go concert. The planning crew will consist of the Activations Team, the Media Team, the Operations Team and the Welcome Team. You must be age 18-24 to work on this crew. Click here to fill out the application.
We offer opportunities to foster creativity, gain paid experience, and receive mentorship from Chicago media professionals. If you love media, culture, and storytelling and want to build a creative career, apply now!
