On Tuesday, True Star’s summer programs made the drive to Halas Hall in Lake Forest, IL, to check out Chicago Bears Training Camp. Along with other Bears fans, many of the people at this practice were other community groups from across the Chicagoland area, so it was cool to see young people being able to see Bears football.
As for the practice itself, we were able to arrive just in time for team drills. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams showed his ability to release the ball quickly and decisively with short and intermediate throws against the first team offense. He also showed great pocket presence and ability to scramble out of the pocket when needed. Williams’ mobility is a part of his game that doesn’t get talked about a lot, but it is absolutely there for him.
One particular play that stood out for the offense was when Williams took a shot downfield to second-year receiver Tyler Scott up the sideline. Williams put the ball right where it needed to be, and Scott extended his arms to make a fantastic catch.
But it wasn’t all about the offense. The defense did keep Williams and the offense out of the end zone in team drills. On one play, Williams tried to fit a ball in a tight window to tight end Cole Kmet in the back of the end zone, but linebacker Tremaine Edmunds broke that pass up. On a different play, Williams tried to throw one to tight end Gerald Everett, but it fell incomplete as linebacker Jack Sanborn had tight coverage on the play.
The enthusiasm surrounding the team was palpable, as the fans were loud and energetic throughout the entire practice. And we can only hope that these successful team practices will lead to more success on the field this season. Thanks again to True Star and the Chicago Bears for the opportunity to experience Bears Training Camp, and let’s go Bears!
