Tyler Perry Cancels Expansion Project Over A.I.

Tyler Perry

Filmmaker Tyler Perry announced that he would be stopping an $800 million film studio expansion because of A.I., marking a doomsday for creatives.

In a piece with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry stated, “I have been watching AI very closely and watching the advancements very closely. I was in the middle of, and have been planning for the last four years, about an $800 million expansion at the studio, which would’ve increased the backlot a tremendous size…”, he continued, “All of that is currently and indefinitely on hold because of Sora and what I’m seeing. I had gotten word over the last year or so that this was coming, but I had no idea until I saw recently the demonstrations of what it’s able to do. It’s shocking to me.”

He continued to say that the ability to never have to move to a new location, and be able to generate any environment they wanted with A.I., would be devastating to the creativity and authenticity of the film world.

Sora is an A.I. software that turns text prompts into video footage. On Sora’s website, they showcase a prompt of a woman walking through downtown Tokyo, and it looks incredibly life-like.

In another Hollywood Reporter article, they cover this new technology. “In the current iteration, there are still a lot of weird quirks, like objects randomly appearing and disappearing and changing shapes, so I don’t think it would be suitable for high-production-value television or cinema,” says AI researcher Gary Marcus. “It’s great for quick prototypes, though.”

It seems like experts are still skeptical about the power of the new A.I. tech, but that doesn’t stop artists like Perry from worrying. I, myself, am a filmmaker, and the ability to create realistic-looking people and environments with the click of a button is terrifying to me. If there are no regulations put in place soon, robots could take over every aspect of our lives.

What do you think of this new tech? Do you think Tyler Perry is right? Let me know!
