It’s always a good time for all the True Star programs to get together, especially when we’re learning something new. This time around, True Star conducted a Session with the Pros segment with Varshini Kumar, Product Marketing Manager from LinkedIn, who provided TS participants with information about creating and editing their accounts.
LinkedIn is a platform described by Kumar as “professional social media” made with the goal of creating connections and showcasing yourself to potential employers and people in similar (or differing) fields. It mainly catered to people in professional fields originally but has expanded to create more connections and community regardless of age or profession.
“We have a lot of aspects of traditional social media where you can connect and speak with other folks and friend requests through a connection and kind of keep track of your professional network,” said Kumar.
LinkedIn is great for those of all ages, including youth who are building their portfolios and work experience. Some of the features that make LinkedIn stand out from other platforms are showing that you’re open to work (or open to hire), a 30-second cover story recorded video, requesting a recommendation from (previous) employers or partners and much more.
“One of the pieces of your personal brand, first and foremost, is to make sure that you are humanizing your online presence,” Kumar said. “Adding a photo really does that and it has a pretty significant impact if you want recruiters to reach out to you for potential internship opportunities or job opportunities.”
It’s never too soon to start building your professional brand and start looking for opportunities for internships or work. Check out more of the segment below.
