Will Libraries be the New Space for Teen Hang Outs?

Sewing is just one of the free fun activities being offered at the Chicago Public Libraries.

Before technology, it was common for teens to head to the park, their local skating rink, or even the library to have fun. With the new events the library has announced, the Chicago Public Library system is definitely trying to bring this excitement for libraries back!

Keep reading to learn more about upcoming events happening at the Chicago Public Libraries.

Sewing Certification for Teensย

I encourage all teens interested in sewing to join the Legler Staff September 9th from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Legler Regional to learn all the ins and outs of sewing machines. Participation in the program allows students to use the equipment whenever they desire so long as no one else is using it.

Teens who participate will have the sewing certification entered into CitySpan. This allows teens to use the sewing machines at any Chicago library location with the available equipment.

Canโ€™t make this session? Donโ€™t worry the event will happen in October, November, and December as well.

Band Patch Making Drop-in

Head to Harold Washington Library Wednesday, September 10th from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm for a creative afternoon band patch making drop in session.

Artistry supplies will be available for those who want to create their own nu-metal punk and emo adjacent designs.

Gamers Universe Showdown Seriesย

The library did not forget all the gamers out there! September 13th from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm the Harold Washington Library presents the Gamerโ€™s Universe Showdown.

Both a Mario Kart and Fatal Fury tournament will be held. Additionally, SquidWest will host Splatoon 3 locals, but you must bring your switch, a copy of the game, a headset, and a controller. This event is hosted by YOUmedia and the Chicago Teen Gamerโ€™s Guild is open to all ages. No registration is required for any of the tournaments or activities including the free play stations.

YOUmedia Crafternoon: Junk Journaling

Located in Chinatown, September 19th from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm you can participate in a fun arts and crafts workshop. YOUmedia will be hosting a Crafternoon. An arts and craft afternoon focused on junk journaling.

Junk journaling is the process of collaging repurposed materials to make personalized art. Let’s create something new together. Bring your own junk or borrow some from the library’s supply!

Teen Lit Night: Unboundย

September 19th fromย  5:00 pm – 8:00 pm the Harold Washington Library will host Teen Lit Night. This event for ages 13-22, celebrates all things young adult literature, art and culture, music, mocktails, custom swag, author chats and more at this year’s Teen Lit Night: Unbound.

Plus, according to the website there will be a free pop-up library to explore new reads!

With the new call for Teen Curfews, I wonder if activities like those at the libraries will help combat the new rise in issues with teens.
