Will We Have Another Black President?

Barack Obama made history by becoming the first Black U.S. president. With four Black men running in the 2024 election, could we get another Black president in office? / Getty

As one month passes on to another, more and more people are campaigning to become the next president of the United States. Election day is November 5th, 2024, and so far the ever changing  list has 16 people running for this top position. Three are running under the Democratic Party, 12 for the Republican Party and one for the People’s Party.

The chances of having a Black president are higher than usual considering four Black men are running — Larry Elder, Tim Scott and Will Hurd for the Republican Party and Cornel West for the People’s Party.

Larry Elder

Elder is a right-wing commentator and host of radio talk show “The Larry Elder Show.” According to the New York Times, Elder announced he was running for president on Tucker Carson’s Fox News show. In interviews, he mentions his patriotic duty stemming from his father and brothers being veterans despite him never serving. Learn more about him by visiting his website.

Tim Scott

Scott is a U.S. senator and the first Black person to become one from South Carolina. He’s been a part of the Senate since 2013. Prior to this, he was the representative for South Carolina’s 1st congressional district for two years. Visit his website for deets on what causes he’s fighting for.

Will Hurd

Hurd is a former U.S. Representative from Texas, serving from 2015 to 2021. When in the House, he was one of few Black Republicans in Congress. He has retired from being a CIA officer as well. Go to his website for a closer look at his campaign and his concerns.

Cornel West / Getty

West is a left-wing progressive activist and professor. He is the sole candidate running for the People’s Party. Much of West’s work discusses race, class, and gender in our society. Go the West’s website to find out more about his fight for justice.

The above candidates are up against former president Donald Trump and former vice president Mike Pence.

With so many candidates with different goals and missions for the country, I wonder who our next president will be. Will we have another Black president? Only time will tell.
