“Invincible” is back and bloodier than ever. The first episode teased a whole new multiverse to explore, including a possible team-up with a certain fan-favorite Marvel superhero.
After almost two years of waiting, the animated series has made its epic return to Amazon Prime Video. Starring Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, A.K.A. Invincible, J.K. Simmons as Omni-Man, Zazie Beetz as Amber Bennett, and Sandra Oh as Debbie Grayson, we pick up shortly where we left in season one, after Mark’s terrifying superhero battle with his evil father, Omni-Man.
Season two episode one makes it immediately obvious why “Invincible” is superior to so many Marvel and DC shows out there. It’s a grounded, gritty reality for Mark and Debbie, a broken family after barely escaping with their lives from their evil alien version of Superman. Debbie, Mark’s mom, and Mark himself, are suffering from depression and PTSD from the events of season one. It’s so heartbreaking, but so compelling and addicting to watch.
Closely following the comic book source material, “Invincible” creator Robert Kirkman sat down with Polygon and told them what he wanted to do to be as faithful as possible: “I’m trying not to pin it down to a number, because it is somewhat of a moving target. I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough… .”
To cover the entire comic, they’d need seven to eight seasons. Wow. Makes sense, though, since the comic creators also wrote “The Walking Dead,” which has its show adaptation currently on its 11th season, with five spin-off series.
This show deserves it, though. It just keeps getting wilder and wilder, especially with the rumors circulating of Spider-Man teaming up with Mark this season. Part of the cast is Josh Keaton starring in an unknown role. Keaton voiced Peter Parker in “The Spectacular Spider-Man”. On top of that, Sony, the company that owns the rights to Spider-Man, is currently developing a “Spider-Man” TV show with Amazon, who owns “Invincible”. Since this season deals with the multiverse, it’s not entirely out of the question that we could see our favorite friendly neighborhood superhero team up with our favorite traumatized superhero.
“Invincible” has it all: top-notch action and deeply written stories and characters. If you haven’t checked out “Invincible” already, now’s the time. Omni-Man’s still out there, waiting to make his return.
