Brunson & Edebiri Make Emmy History

Actresses Quinta Brunson and Ayo Edebiri had a great Emmy night. The duo made history by becoming the first two Black women to have won Emmys for both Best Leading and Best Supporting Actress in the same year.

The Emmy Awards brings the greatest talents in modern entertainment together to see who comes out on top. Fans across the globe tune in to root for their favorite TV shows, favorite celebrities, or just to take a look at iconic celebrity fashion. This year’s Emmy Awards was full of category sweeps, with drama series’ like “The Bear” winning six awards in the comedy categories, “Succession” also securing six awards in the drama category, and “Beef” winning five awards in the limited series categories.

One of the highlights of the night was seeing up-and-coming actress Ayo Edebiri winning her first-ever Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in the dramedy series “The Bear”. The 28-year-old Barbadian-Nigerian actress also won her first Golden Globe and Critic’s Choice Award just days prior. Alongside “Abbott Elementary” actress and writer Quinta Brunson, the duo made history by becoming the first two Black women to have won Emmys for both Best Leading and Best Supporting Actress in the same year. (Fun Fact: Brunson and Edebiri play siblings on “Abbott Elementary”.)

The 2024 Emmys also gave away to many other first-time winners. Jeremy Allen-White (most commonly known for his role as Lip on the hit dramedy series “Shameless”) secured his first Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Carmy in “The Bear”. Ali Wong also won her first Emmy for Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series, becoming the first Asian woman to win in this category. Her co-star, Steven Yeun won his first Emmy as well for Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series. Legendary musician Elton John also reached a milestone at this year’s Emmy Awards by achieving EGOT status (those who have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards for their various talents) after winning the award for Outstanding Variety Special.

Niecy Nash-Betts

Actress Niecy Nash-Betts also walked away with an Emmy. Nash-Betts was awarded for Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for her role as Glenda Cleveland in “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.” Nash is making headlines for giving one of the most emotional speech of the night.

Just by looking at the array of both entertaining and creative media, it is safe to say that good television is back! As many of these critically acclaimed programs continue to announce new seasons, the audience is left begging for more.
