The 2024 Emmy nominations were just announced and the competition is tight.
For Outstanding Comedy Series, some of the notable noms were “Abbot Elementary,” “Reservation Dogs,” “The Bear,” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” How someone could watch “The Bear” and still label it a comedy series is anyone’s guess.
Within that category, the nominated lead actors included Jeremy Allen White for “The Bear,” D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai for “Reservation Dogs,” and Matt Berry for “What We Do in the Shadows.” The nominated actresses included Ayo Edebiri for “The Bear,” Quinta Brunson for “Abbot Elementary,” and Selena Gomez for “Only Murders in the Building.”
Bob Odenkirk was nominated for an Outstanding Actor Guest Appearance on “The Bear”. He’s been Emmy nominated for every season of “Better Call Saul” before it ended, and never won once, so we could see a legacy win in this category for him, although he is going up against Ryan Gosling for SNL, so we’ll see.
Next up, some of the highlights of the Outstanding Drama Series category were “Fallout,” “Shōgun,” and “The Crown”. Some of the nominated leads in this category were Hiroyuki Sanada from “Shōgun,” Donald Glover for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and Walton Goggins from “Fallout.” Maya Erskine was nominated for Outstanding Actress for “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” and Anna Sawai for “Shōgun.” If Sawai doesn’t win best actress, we riot!
To no one’s surprise, the Emmys nomination website put the Outstanding Animated Program towards the very back of its page. Some of the nominations included “Blue Eye Samurai,” “Scavengers Reign,” and “X-Men ‘97.” There’s still no voice acting nomination category. Maybe they’re too scared to put one, because Maya Erskine would sweep the entire category for her work as Mizu in “Blue Eye Samurai.” Funny enough, that would also make her nominated for two different TV shows in the same night.
Which shows are definitely going to win, and which one should you should watch ASAP, you ask? Though the third season’s a little slower than the rest, “The Bear” is absolutely worth checking out, even if it’s only to spot which Chicagoland places you know. If you’re missing “Game of Thrones,” “Shōgun” could fill that void inside of you, with tense historical drama and multiple Emmy-worthy performances. Finally, “Scavengers Reign” is the sci-fi cosmic horror no one talks about, and has scenes that make you reflect on how you think about our place in the universe.
Were there noms that I forgot to shout out? Ones that got snubbed? Let me know! The Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on Sunday, Sept. 15th at 7:00 PM on CBS.
