Say his name, Marcellus Williams.
In 2001, Marcellus Williams was convicted of murdering former reporter Felicia Gayle. He was accused of breaking into her home and stabbing her 43 times. Williams was charged with a life sentence without parole and the death penalty.
One is usually charged if the prosecution can prove a suspect committed the crime, based on compelling evidence, credible witnesses, surveillance video, etc. In the judicial system, youโre supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. However, there are far too many instances in which African Americans are โguilty until proven innocent.โ Williams is another example that in this society, Black Lives STILL Donโt Matter. According to reports, there was no forensic evidence such as DNA or hair which linked him back to the crime scene. The fact that the compelling evidence was absent in this case, definitely creates reasonable doubt.ย Williams, who maintained his innocence, was executed, in spite of the fact that reasonable doubt exists.
Williams was set to be executed on September 24, 2024 at 6pm CT. The judicial system allowed his execution to proceed, and he is no longer living. There were over 1.4 million people who signed petitions to halt Williamsโ death. The governor of Missouri, Mike Parson, denied clemency. The Missouri Supreme Court denied clemency. The highest court of the land, the Supreme Court of the United States, even declined clemency in a 6-3 vote.
According to CBS affiliate KMOV-TV, Williams’ last statement was, “All praise be to Allah in every situation!”

This man should still be alive. He was a sad example of what occurs when youโre Black in America. In fact, Felicia Gayleโs family, the victim he was accused of killing, didn’t even want him on Death Row. At the end of the day, justice did not prevail for Marcellus Williams.
