Simple, Sustainable Changes to Try

With Earth Month just days away, now is the perfect time to introduce simple, sustainable habits into your daily routine. Small changes can have a big impact over time — especially when it comes to your diet and household choices. Here are easy steps to help you create a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Start with Meatless Mondays

Going plant-based even one day a week can reduce your environmental footprint. Try swapping one meal a day for a plant-based option to ease into the change. Start with simple recipes like veggie tacos, lentil soup, or stir-fried tofu. Plant-based proteins such as tofu, tempeh, lentils, chickpeas, and black beans are not only sustainable but also packed with nutrients.

Focus on Whole Foods

Incorporating more whole foods into your diet is a win for both your health and the environment. Eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, nuts, and seeds to get essential nutrients while cutting down on processed food waste. Swap white rice for quinoa, and try whole grain or lentil pasta instead of refined options for added fiber and nutrients.

Switch to Plant-Based Alternatives

Dairy production has a significant environmental impact, but there are plenty of delicious plant-based options. Try replacing cow’s milk with almond, oat, soy, or cashew milk. These alternatives are widely available and work well in coffee, smoothies, and baking.

Stock Up on Staples

Keeping your kitchen stocked with versatile, plant-based ingredients makes sustainable cooking easier. Quinoa, lentils, chickpeas, canned tomatoes, leafy greens, and nuts are great staples that can form the base of many meals. Having these on hand encourages you to cook at home more often, reducing food waste and plastic packaging.

Sustainability is all about consistency. Start small and build up — whether it’s committing to Meatless Mondays or swapping out dairy a few times a week. These simple changes can add up to a meaningful environmental impact over time.
