While some major companies have buckled under pressure to roll back their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, others are continuing to maintain their commitments to these important programs. In a new executive order designed to dismantle Federal DEI efforts, several leading businesses continue to stand firm on their inclusive practices.
According to ABC News, Costco recommended that its shareholders vote against a proposal to evaluate and report on any risks associated with the company’s DEI work. “Our efforts around diversity, equity, and inclusion follow our code of ethics,” the Costco board stated. These efforts enhance our capacity to attract and retain employees who will help our business succeed.”
Similarly, Apple’s board of directors requested that shareholders reject a proposal that would have scaled back the tech giant’s DEI initiatives. “We strive to create a culture of belonging where everyone can do their best work,” the company responded.
Another major company that has remained steadfast in its commitment to inclusivity efforts is Delta Air Lines, with their Chief External Affairs Officer Peter Carter declaring “DEI is about talent, and that’s been our focus.”
Pintrest’s CEO Bill Ready recently stated that diversity is not going anywhere within their company. “We’re not [changing anything], and the reason is we’ve seen it’s leading to better engagement, there’s consumer demand for it, it’s good for our business.”
While the future of corporate DEI efforts remains uncertain, these companies’ refusal to back down in the face of political and legal pressure sends a powerful message.
